Home is Where the Heart Is
Mama K
I'm a fortunate woman. I have homes in many places. Not actual physical residences, but places I carry with me in my heart. I recently had the chance, thanks to the generosity of my children, to go back home to Canada for a visit. Although I love my adopted home where I live with my husband, here in North Texas, a large part of my heart always lives in my homeland.

One of the best gifts I had during this visit with the amount of time I was able to spend with my dearest lifelong friend, who's known as Mama B to all of you here on this website. We spent some wonderful quality time together. We did a lot of exploring and walking (one of our favorite things to do). Because I'd just finished a rather sedantry hot Summer in Texas, the walking part was a personal challenge for me. Mama B spends most of her days chasing around a handful of grandchildren she cares for, while I have a much easier challenge caring for our two small dogs. The effort was worth it. We took a hike to beautiful China Beach on Vancouver Island, as well as along the Cowichan River Estuary, where we were rewarded with the sighting of a flock of beautiful swans.
The weather on the Island can be a little unpredictable this time of year, and the days alternated between warm and wonderful, and windy and rainy. But after a Summer of 100 degree temperatures the cooler weather was a welcome bonus for me. We spent on glorious afternoon visiting a cornmaze and pumpkin patch, complete with a hayride.
I managed to fit in two of my favorite activities -- watching beautiful sunsets, although the October winds were brisk and cold, and visiting the nearby country market. I didn't buy much, but I did enjoy watching the goats graze on the grass thatched roof. I never tire of that.
The three weeks passed quicker than I'd hoped. As I headed down the highway towards the ferry that would take me back to Texas, my mind began recalling all the things I had wanted to do, and the places I had wanted to see one more time, that I just never had the time to get around to. Thankfully, My Northern Home isn't going anywhere and I'll be back again next year.
In the meantime, I left a piece of my heart there, so I could return to claim it as I headed back to warmer weather, my little Texas family and Southern Home.
