Frugal Fridays -- An Experiment
Mama B
I am trying something new, at least it is new to me. I got tired of throwing out fresh produce that had gone bad before I got to use them and so, I did some research on how to extend the shelf life of my purchases. Pinterest is my best friend. Drives my husband crazy, so I hope that this experiment works and thus, saves us money. He will like that. Apparantly, storing fresh veggies in mason jars in the fridge is the secret to helping them last longer. So, that's my experiment. I dug out several of my canning jars and their lids, cleaned them up and filled them with whatever produce I had on hand. I was worried that there wouldn't be room in the fridge for the jars, but they take up less room than all the bags of veggies. As Mama K pointed out, there is the added bonus of having all the prep work done as well. I buy my romaine lettuce already cut up in the big bags, and usually end up throwing a lot of it into the compost. I squished as much as I could into the jars, to get as much air as possible out, before putting on the lids. One of the blurbs I read suggested using the jar thingy on a food saver vacuum sealer to suck out the air, but that it isn't necessary. I don't have a vacuum sealer, although it has been on my wishlist for some time now. I am so excited to see how this works out!! ( I know- I get excited over the weirdest things!) UPDATE: I loved the results of using the jars to store our fresh produce!! It worked really well for me! The "shelf life" of the fresh veggies was two weeks longer than I had expected! I will definitely be doing this from now on!! |
